What is Sports Massage?

Sports Massage is defined as massage and facilitated stretching for athletic people, tailored to their specific sports and the muscles used for them. For example, a golfer will need different work and stretches than a runner will, and sports massage focuses on exactly what your body does when you play your sport.

What is ‘facilitated stretching’?

Quite simply, I perform the stretch for you by moving your body or limbs with little to no help from you. This is otherwise known as Passive Stretching.

How will facilitated stretching help me?

When we stretch ourselves, so many other muscles need to work hard to make that stretch happen. The body cannot release into the stretch to the same extend as when you are completely relaxed and someone else is moving you into a stretch.

Facilitated stretching can also isolate muscles and stretch them individually in a way that we cant when we stretch ourselves because when our own brains tell muscles to move, the muscles tend to fire as a group. Once we have stretched those muscles out more than your regular stretching routine could, I will give you specific stretches you can incorporate into your routine so as to make it more effective.

What will my Sports Massage session look like?

Your session will focus entirely on the parts of your body that you use in your sport. I will look at the joints, muscles, and ligaments to determine any problems or imbalances. Then, through massage, passive stretching and passive joint mobilization, endeavor to resolve those problems.

Every session is unique to the athlete and can vary in length from 15 to 90 minutes. Sessions typically culminate with me showing you exercises or stretches, specific to your needs, that will keep you performing optimally and less likely to injure yourself.

Is Sports Massage only for people with injuries?

Taliesen Administering Sports Massage

Although I can absolutely help injured athletes, Sports Massage is far more about maintenance and prevention. Sports massage helps you perform better and injure yourself less.
